Related narrative: Amyand's Hernia Amyand's hernia Claudius Amyand, surgeon to King George II of Britain, performed the first recorded appendectomy in 1736. The patient was an 11-year-old boy who had perforation of the appendix by a pin, and the appendix and omentum were in a chronic scrotal right inguinal hernia complicated by a fecal fistula. The appendix and omentum were removed through a scrotal incision. In the early 1900s this precedent was recognized and the condition was given the eponym Amyand's hernia. The term has most commonly been applied to an inflamed appendix in a right inguinal hernia, but has also been used in situations where the appendix is not inflamed. An appendix in a hernia is very rare (~0.1%) and when inflamed, mimics an acutely incarcerated inguinal hernia. When the appendix is inflamed, authors of reported cases emphasize that mesh should not be placed in the wound, and a tissue repair (Shouldice etc.) should be done after resection of the appendix.
