The neural placode in this case represented the splayed terminal portion of the spinal cord, without evidence of cauda equina or filum terminale. Note the origin of the distal nerve roots from the ventral surface of the placode.

The relationship of the placode to the cyst wall is shown. The placode is basically exposed centrally, with the dura (blue) partially lining the CSF filled cyst.

The patient was taken to the operating room at two days of age for repair. The incision was made in the non-viable cicatrix between the edge of the placode and the viable skin.
