A lateral X-ray of the soft tissue defect of a myelomeningocele in a neonate is shown. The condition was identified on pre-natal ultrasound and repair was planned after delivery.

The myelomeningocele was kept covered to prevent desiccation and damage to the exposed neural tissue.

The patient was taken to the operating room at 48 hours post delivery for repair of the defect (see myelomeningocele for embryology, schematics and discussion of the condition). The incision line in the non-viable cicatrix is shown.
