The first stitch in the valve ring was placed with the valve held by the valve holder and handle. While the aorta is open, the field is flooded with CO2 to displace nitrogen and oxygen. The CO2 is more readily absorbed than atmospheric nitrogen.

The final stitch is shown being placed. Heparin is monitored every thirty minutes using the ACT and Hepcon. Additional Heparin is administered as needed by the perfusionist.
