A Mezzenbaum scissors was introduced toward the superficial ring with the point up against the external oblique to avoid catching the ilioinguinal nerve.

The external oblique was opened toward the superficial ring, and then toward the deep ring. The fascia was sheared with a slightly opened scissors tip, keeping the lower blade up toward the fascia.
