Histologic section shows schwannoma wtih spindle cells arranged in short, interlacing fascicles with palisading or alignment in rows (Verocay bodies).

Discussion:

Most peripheral nerve tumors arise from the Schwann cells of the nerve sheath. Neurilemomas and neurofibromas are the common benign tumors of Schwann cell origin. Neurilemomas are most often solitary and encapsulated. They displace nerve fibers and cause symptoms by compression. They can usually be shelled out, as in this case, without damage to the nerve. Precise dissection under magnification with loupes or operating microscope is necessary for safe removal.
