The cortical branches of the middle cerebral spread out over the lateral surfaces of the frontal, parietal, occipital and temporal lobes.

The posterior cerebral artery is the terminal branch of the basilar artery. After connecting with the posterior communicating artery, it fans out on the undersurface of the temporal and occipital lobes. It supplies branches to the adjacent structures including the hypothalamus. thalamus and choroid plexuses of the third and lateral ventricles.

The posterior cerebral runs parallel to the superior cerebellar on the opposite side of the tentorium. The two vessels are separated by the oculomotor nerve (C III).
