The rat's (~600g) hind limbs are secured with masking tape to a board with notches for rubber band retractors. A skin incision is made from knee to pubis.

Slow steady traction of the skin edges begins the dissection of the subcutaneous tissue.

Retractors are placed in the skin edges. The subcutaneous fat is divided with iris scissors over the adductor muscles of the thigh, and the fat pad along the caudal border of the incision is opened toward the midline.
