The thumb ray is pulled out to it original length, placed in palmar abduction (position of opposition) and held in this position by 0.045 inch K-wires.

The K-wires are placed between the first and second metacarpals to stabilize the reconstruction for eight weeks before rehabilitation of the wrist and thumb is begun.
