Arthrodesis was typically done on young laboring men who needed strength without pain. Many hand surgeons considered this a terrible operation to do because it locked the thumb into the palm.

After arthrodesis, the patient could not easily put the palm flat on a surface to push, because the thumb would be in the way.

Rigidity of the MCT joint transferred the burden of first ray movement to the scaphotrapezial (S-T) joint. Theoretically, this would lead to degenerative joint disease (DJD = osteoarthritis), because the S-T would become hypermobile trying to recreate the tremendous motion available normally at the MC-T joint.
