The upper fibers of the gluteus maximus insert into the upper end of the iliotibial band, converging with the fibers of the tensor fasciae latae anteriorly. The gluteus is the outer of the two muscle layers over the posterior aspect of the hip joint. The lower fibers of the gluteus insert into the gluteal tuberosity on the posterolateral aspect of the proximal femoral shaft.
