The posterior border of the greater trochanter was exposed. The deep layer of muscles covering the hip joint, the short rotators of the femur attach along the inner lip of the posterior border of the greater trochanter.

The short rotators consist of the pyriformis, gemelli, obturator internus and obturator externus. The pyriformis tendon was tagged, and the muscles were divided close to their femoral insertion to expose the posterior hip capsule.
