The gluteus maximus was split in the line of its fibers, and crossing branches of the superior and inferior gluteal arteries were controlled. The inferior gluteal nerve enters the muscle anterior to the split, and is preserved. The hip is exposed posterior to the posterior border of the gluteus medius, leaving that muscle attached to the greater trochanter.
