This arthroscopic photo shows the displaced "bucket handle" medial meniscus tear. This type of tear may become displaced into the notch of the knee and prevent motion.

These "bucket handle" tears are often not amenable to actual repair techniques and must be resected. The peripheral base of the meniscus is salvaged and does function to provide some intrinsic stability. Partial meniscectomy involves debridement and resection of the torn, displaced fragment. The posterior attachment of the bucket handle is shown being cut.
