The scissors cut most comfortably from right to left (right handed surgeon) and away from the surgeon. The points can be directed down or up (toward the dorsum of the hand) to follow the curve of the structure being dissected. Blunt dissection is done with the opening action of the blades in preparation for cutting.
For the standard needle-holder grip, the tips of the thumb and ring finger are in the rings and the extended index finger steadies the tip. This grip provides the most secure opening and closing motion.
