What is a hernia?

A hernia is a body wall weakness that allows structures that are normally contained to protrude. The abdomen, particularly the groin (inguinal) area, is a common site for hernias to occur.

What are the different types of groin hernias?

A hernia may be present from birth (congenital), in which case it is called an indirect inguinal hernia. This type results from incomplete closure of the scrotal sac that allows descent of the testicle in the male (and is also present in the female) at birth. The passage between the layers of the abdominal wall traversed by this sac and by the testicle is called the inguinal canal. Many of these hernias manifest themselves in the neonatal period and are repaired when the infant is several months old. A remnant of this sac may persist into adult life and become dilated with time. Such hernias are more commonly seen in younger men.

Weakness in the inguinal area may also develop with time as the body ages. This is called a direct inguinal hernia. Such hernias are more common in the older population. Although inguinal hernias are more common in men, they also occur in women. It is difficult to determine which of the two types of inguinal hernias is present by examination and both may be present at the same time. It is not important to distinguish the type before surgery.
