A Metzenbaum scissors was inserted in the opening with the points up. Keeping the points pushed tightly up against the underside of the aponeurosis, the points were slid down into the superficial ring. This avoids catching the ilioinguinal nerve. The points were then opened to separate the planes.

The bottom blade of the slightly-opened scissors was placed beneath the aponeurosis, and again pushing up against the under surface, the scissors points were pushed into the superficial ring, opening the fascia.
