It was determined that primary abdominal closure was not safe because of tension from distended bowel and the possibility of creating an abdominal compartment syndrome (diminished venous return, vascular compromise, respiratory embarrassment). An absorbable mesh was sutured to the fascial edges.

A laparotomy pad was left on top of the mesh and a 16 Fr red rubber catheter was laid on top of the pad.
