At the apex of the breast is the pigmented nipple and surrounding areola. The small bumps in the areola are sebaceous glands which lubricate the area, particularly during nursing.

The base of the breast lies on the chest wall muscles, mainly the pectoralis major. The surface of the muscle is covered with a connective tissue layer called the pectoral fascia.
