The saphenous vein was exposed along its length and all side branches ligated. The posterior side of the vein is left attached to preserve its intrinsic blood supply and prevent ischemic injury and occlusion. The contiguous proximal calf incision through soleus exposed the distal popliteal artery (see peroneal bypass). Care was taken to avoid injury to the saphenous nerve which accompanies the saphenous vein below the knee.
