The rectum has a full outer longitudinal outer muscle layer as the taeneae spread out at the rectosigmoid junction. Thus there are no diverticula in the rectum. The peritoneal reflection is at the 12cm mark of the 16cm rectal segment. Perforation below the reflection does not cause generalized peritonitis and may be treated non-operatively in many cases. The rectum has three blood supplies: superior rectal (terminal branch of the IMA) middle recitals (lateral stalks) from the internal iliac, and the pudendal branches from below.
