Laparoscopic Splenectomy: 7

The gastrosplenic ligament is successively divided (optimally using the harmonic scalpel) and the spleen is elevated. The final attachment of the upper end of the splenorenal ligament and splenophrenic ligament are divided and the spleen dropped into a sturdy plastic bag. The neck of the bag is brought up through a large port and the spleen is broken up using a finger and removed. Occasionally the incision may need to be slightly enlarged, especially if larger segments of spleen are desirable for histological study.
