The first 1-cm band of muscle was isolated. No local anesthetic was injected into the muscle in order to not compromise the examination of the specimen. Discomfort from the muscle dissection is minimal and easily controlled with IV analgesia and sedation.

The band was gently retracted with a soft rubber drain and the ends lengthened.
